Needs Ecclesial Oversight
I downloaded this app because it looked like a great way to help prepare myself for the Sacrament of Confession. I know I sometimes have been known to write a list before going to confession and the fact this app is password protected is great. This app has a lot of potential, and I know the creator must have had the best of intentions when he made it. Sadly, as someone with a degree in theology and catechetics, and as someone who works in Church ministry, I can't recommend this app. In fact as it is stands now, I feel it could do potential harm to souls and create scruples.
The largest issue is about the understanding about the nature of venial and mortal sins. Whether or not a sin is mortal or venial is dependent upon a set of criteria laid out by the Church (see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1857). For a sin to be mortal, it must first be or grave (serious) matter, but it must also be committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent. Without the later two criteria, the culpability of the sin is lessened. In the app, the creator categorizes sins as either mortal or venial without any regard to the circumstances surrounding the commission of the sin. For instance, the creator lists sterilization as a mortal sin. While this is certainly a serious sin and has the potential to be mortal, many people are ignorant on the Church's teaching on human sexuality. If they don't know it is a sin when they commit it, they aren't committing it with full knowledge, and therefore the sin is not mortal. In another example, the creator lists the taking of illegal drugs as a mortal sin. Of course many people who take illegal drugs are addicted, meaning their will has become compromised. In this state, they aren't able to give deliberate consent to the sin, which once again mitigates the sin significantly. The creator needs to recognize the goal of an examination of conscience is not to be tool of objective judgement, but an aid to thoughtful discernment. The question of whether or not a sin is mortal or venial should be left up to the individual conscience, perhaps with the aid of a knowledgeable spiritual director or confessor. It would be great if this app helped people form their consciences properly.
The second largest issue with the app is theological liberties are taken which deviate from Church teaching and end up in the realm of theological opinion. These tend to be on the more theologically conservative side of the spectrum, and while I also tend to mostly agree with them, it is important to know that they aren't formally taught by the Church. In some cases they are theological extensions of a Church teaching. For instance, the Church does teach it is a sin to vote for someone because they are pro-abortion. The creator however lists "Knowingly voting for someone who is pro abortion" as a mortal sin. The difference is one of intention. Voting for a candidate who happens to be pro-abortion is different than voting for a candidate because they are pro-abortion. From a moral theology perspective, there could be a situation where one could hypothetically vote for a pro-abortion candidate even though one disagrees with their stance. Personally I've never seen such a situation, and I don't think it is very likely unless all the candidates running are pro-abortion, nonetheless the situation is possible, and the creator's language is misleading from the Church's true teaching. Another example is the line on excessive tattoos and body piercings. This is more of a theological (or even personal) opinion than stretching a Church teaching. Again, I might agree with the sentiment, but as a professional in the Church I have to call it the way the Church teaches it. The Church doesn't have an official teaching on body art except it should befitting of the Temple of the Holy Spirit.
I really want to see this app succeed, and I see a lot of potential in it. I hope the creator would take it through a real review process, and perhaps even consult the clergy or other ecclesial experts. Really something like this should really have an imprimatur or at least a nihil obstat. However as it stands, it could really misinform some people and do some serious spiritual damage to souls looking for the mercy of God.
Great app but still needs some things.
This is an easy to use app but would like to see the 7 precepts added as well as an act of contrition. Needs some spell checking as well. Overall I love it.
